Google's Gemini app now builds and edits Sheets, Slides and PDFs in chat as of Oct. 29
If your team uses Google Workspace, staff can now draft trackers, decks and PDFs inside Gemini at no listed extra cost, and admins cannot switch off this feature alone.
- What happened
On Oct. 29, 2026, Google said the Gemini app can now generate, preview and edit files inside the chat, including documents, spreadsheets, slide decks, PDFs, Markdown, TXT and code, with options to open them in Google Sheets or Slides, download as PPTX or PDF, or upload to Drive. PDF preview and editing works on web and mobile while the other formats are web-only, and the feature is available now to all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers and personal Google accounts, with no admin control other than turning the Gemini app on or off.
- What it means for a 10-to-50-person business
For a Workspace shop, this cuts the copy-paste step between asking Gemini for something and having a usable file. Take a 20-person plumbing company where the office manager rebuilds a service-agreement renewal tracker each month. She can ask Gemini for a sheet with customer, address, plan, renewal date and last visit columns, check the layout in the chat, then open it in Sheets. If that saves 30 minutes a week (our assumption), it comes to about 26 hours a year, roughly $910 at $35 an hour. Check every number and formula before anyone relies on it. The governance point matters more than the feature. There is no switch for file generation alone, so if the Gemini app is on, anyone with access can create files and push them to Drive. Owners who already allow Gemini should spend an hour testing it on one real task. Owners not on Google Workspace, or who have the Gemini app turned off, can ignore this.
- What to do
- Try it
This month, have your office manager spend one hour using the Gemini app to build one recurring tracker or one proposal deck, then decide whether to keep the Gemini app on for the whole company.

Questions owners ask
- Does this cost extra on top of Google Workspace?
Google's announcement lists no separate charge. It says the feature is available to all Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers and personal Google accounts wherever the Gemini app is available.
- Can I turn off file generation without turning off Gemini?
No. Google says there is no admin control for this feature. The only control is turning the Gemini app on or off for your domain in the Admin console.
- Does it work on phones?
Only for PDFs. Documents, spreadsheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT and code previews and edits are web-only for now.
Three to five of these, every weekday morning.
