ChatGPT Business vs Enterprise for a 20-person company: $20 a seat, and why you probably do not need Enterprise
ChatGPT Business lists at $20 per user per month billed annually. Enterprise is quote-only. For a 20-person company the real question is how many of the 20 need a seat.
The short version
- What happened
OpenAI's help center lists ChatGPT Business standard seats at $20 per user per month billed annually or $25 monthly, with a 2-seat minimum. On August 24, 2026, OpenAI added Premium seats to Business at $100 per user per month billed annually or $125 monthly.
- What it means for a 10-to-50-person business
ChatGPT Business is the plan for a company, not a person. It adds an admin console, single sign-on, connectors to tools like Google Drive and Slack, and keeps conversations out of model training by default. Enterprise adds heavier security, compliance and support, at a price OpenAI does not publish. Take a 20-person landscaping company in Fort Collins. Six people work in the office: estimating, scheduling, billing, the owner. Fourteen are in the field. Business for all 20 at $20 is $4,800 a year. Business for the six office staff is $1,440 a year. Crews can still use a free personal account for a quick question, but never with customer data. A 20-person company should not be talking to Enterprise sales.
- What to do
- Try it
Start ChatGPT Business with only the office staff who write daily, billed monthly for 60 days, and stop staff from putting customer data into personal accounts.
- What it costs
What it costs - ChatGPT Business, 6 standard seats × $20/mo (annual)
- $1,440/yr
- ChatGPT Business, 20 standard seats × $20/mo (annual)

The short version
- ChatGPT Business standard seats list at $20 per user per month billed annually, $25 monthly. There is a 2-seat minimum.
- Enterprise is a custom contract with no published price. A 20-person company rarely needs it.
- The best reason to buy Business is control: company data in a company workspace. Buy seats for the office, not the whole payroll.
1. What it is
ChatGPT comes in personal plans (Free, Go, Plus, Pro) and company plans (Business, Enterprise). The model inside is largely the same. What changes is who owns the account, who can see the data, and what the admin controls look like.
ChatGPT Business (it was sold as ChatGPT Team before OpenAI renamed it) is the self-serve company plan. You sign up with a card, add seats and manage them in an admin console. OpenAI's help center lists SAML single sign-on, an admin console, connectors to tools like Google Drive and Slack, and conversations excluded from model training by default.
ChatGPT Enterprise is the contract plan. It adds stronger data controls, compliance features, and dedicated support. OpenAI does not publish a price. You talk to sales.
2. What it costs
As of October 2026, OpenAI's help center lists:
- Standard seat: $20 per user per month billed annually, or $25 billed monthly.
- Premium seat: $100 per user per month billed annually, or $125 billed monthly. Added August 24, 2026, with about five times the usage of a standard seat and no five-hour usage limit.
- Minimum: 2 seats in total, of either type or one of each.
- Enterprise: quote-only.
Some agent features now draw on credits as well. OpenAI moved ChatGPT workspace agents to credit-based pricing on July 6, 2026. If you plan to use them heavily, ask how many credits come with your seats.
3. A worked example: a 20-person landscaping company
A 20-person landscape and snow company in Fort Collins has 6 people in the office: the owner, two estimators, a scheduler, a billing clerk and an account manager for commercial contracts. The other 14 run crews.
All 20 seats, annual: 20 × $20 × 12 = $4,800 a year. All 20 seats, monthly: 20 × $25 × 12 = $6,000 a year. Office only, annual: 6 × $20 × 12 = $1,440 a year.
What the office six use it for:
- Estimators turn site notes into proposal language for HOA and commercial bids.
- The account manager drafts contract renewal letters and summarises RFPs.
- The billing clerk drafts polite past-due notes and checks spreadsheet formulas.
If each of the six saves 1.5 hours a week, that is about 39 hours a month. At $30 an hour of staff cost (use yours), roughly $1,170 a month against $120 in seats.
The crews do not need seats. A foreman asking how to adjust an irrigation controller can use a free account, as long as company rules say no customer names, addresses or contract terms go into it.
4. Why not Enterprise
Enterprise exists for companies with security reviews, compliance officers and hundreds of users. Its value is contract terms, data retention controls and support. A 20-person company rarely has the volume or the compliance needs to justify a custom contract. If a customer contract requires specific data handling, read the Business terms first, then ask OpenAI whether Business meets it before you open an Enterprise conversation.
5. Should anyone get a Premium seat?
Only someone who hits the standard limit in normal work. In a 20-person trade or services company, that is maybe one person: the owner who uses it all day, or whoever does heavy spreadsheet analysis. Premium at $100 a month annual is five standard seats' worth of money. Wait until a person runs into the cap at least twice in a month.
Mixed example: 5 standard seats plus 1 premium seat, annual, is (5 × $20 + $100) × 12 = $2,400 a year.
6. The real reason to buy it
Most small companies already use ChatGPT. They just use it on personal accounts. That means customer names, bid numbers and employee issues sit in accounts the company does not control, under settings it never checked. When someone leaves, the history leaves with them.
Business fixes that for $20 a seat. That alone can justify the office seats, before you count any time saved.
7. What to ignore
Ignore per-seat comparisons against Claude and Copilot as a deciding factor; they cost about the same. Ignore upgrade nudges toward Enterprise unless a customer contract demands it. Ignore buying seats "for everyone" to be fair. Seats are a tool, not a perk.
8. What to do
- Count the people who write or analyse something every day. That is your seat number.
- Start Business billed monthly for 60 days.
- Write a one-page rule: what customer data can go in, and a ban on personal accounts for company work.
- After 60 days, move to annual billing and save $5 a seat a month if usage holds.

The verdict
Start ChatGPT Business with only the office staff who write daily, billed monthly for 60 days, and stop staff from putting customer data into personal accounts.
Questions owners ask
- How much does ChatGPT Business cost per user?
As of October 2026, standard seats are $20 per user per month billed annually or $25 billed monthly. Premium seats are $100 annual or $125 monthly. The minimum is 2 seats in total.
- What is the difference between ChatGPT Business and Enterprise?
Business is self-serve with published prices, admin tools, SSO and connectors. Enterprise adds stronger compliance, data controls and support on a custom contract. OpenAI does not publish Enterprise pricing.
- Is ChatGPT Business worth it for a small company?
For staff who write emails, estimates and proposals every day, usually. The bigger win is control: company data stays in a workspace you manage, and it is excluded from training by default.
- Does ChatGPT Business use my data for training?
OpenAI says Business conversations are excluded from model training by default. Personal Free and Plus accounts have different settings, which is one reason to move staff to a company workspace.
- What are ChatGPT Business Premium seats?
Introduced August 24, 2026, Premium seats give about five times the usage of a standard seat and remove the five-hour usage limit. You can mix Premium and Standard seats in one workspace.
- Can I use ChatGPT Plus for my business instead?
You can, but each Plus account is a personal account. You get no admin console, no central billing and no control when someone leaves.
Three to five of these, every weekday morning.
