Microsoft says Windows Copilot will use files on your PC, with your permission; no price or date
Microsoft's Oct. 7 post gives no price, date or admin settings for Copilot's file access, so the only move this month is to ask.
- What happened
In an Oct. 7, 2026 post, Microsoft said Copilot on Windows will be able to use local context from a PC and take actions on the user's behalf, "with your permission." The same post says Microsoft Execution Containers, which let an organization set which files and networks an AI agent can reach, are now generally available on Windows 11.
- What it means for a 10-to-50-person business
Microsoft's post gives no price, no plan requirement and no ship date for the Copilot file features; a news report quotes a Microsoft executive saying "the next couple months." The effect on most shops this month is small. Take a 14-person accounting firm with 10 Windows 11 PCs where one admin spends about 3 hours a week finding and sending client documents. If an assistant halved that, the firm would get back about 78 hours a year, roughly $2,340 at $30/hr. That upside is unproven. The risk is an assistant that can read local folders and draft emails attaching the wrong client's file. Firms that keep client tax, legal or payroll files on desktops should care most. Trades shops whose job files live in a field-service app can mostly ignore this for now.
- What to do
- Ask your vendor
Ask whoever manages your PCs (or your Microsoft reseller) whether Copilot's file access can be limited or turned off per user in Intune before it ships, and leave current Copilot settings alone until you hear back.
- What it costs
What it costs - Copilot local-file features
- price not announced
- Asking your IT provider about controls
- 0.5 hr (≈ $25 at $50/hr)
- Possible time saved, assume 3 hrs/week cut in half
- about 78 hrs/yr (≈ $2,340 at $30/hr), unproven
- Doing nothing
- $0 now; the features are expected to reach Windows 11 PCs within months, and you will not know the default setting until you check

Questions owners ask
- Will this turn on automatically for my staff?
Microsoft's post says "with your permission" but does not describe default settings or admin controls. Confirm before the rollout reaches your PCs.
- Do I need a paid Copilot plan?
Not stated in Microsoft's post.
Three to five of these, every weekday morning.
