Zapier puts AI steps, code and SDK on task pricing; Professional still from $19.99/mo
If your Zaps use AI or Code steps, they may now use more tasks per run, which can push a small shop into higher-priced overage billing.
- What happened
Zapier's pricing page, updated Oct. 23, 2026, says AI steps, code and the SDK now follow the same task-based pricing model as Zap workflows, all drawing from one shared task pool per account. The page says AI model tier, code runtime and connector type each affect how many tasks an action uses, while plans still start at $0 (100 tasks a month), $19.99 a month for Professional and $69 a month for Team with 25 users.
- What it means for a 10-to-50-person business
An 18-person plumbing shop on Zapier Professional runs about 1,200 tasks a month: new-job alerts, invoice syncs to the accounting system, review requests. Say 300 of those runs include an AI step that summarises tech notes. Zapier now says more powerful AI models, extra tools and longer code runs use more tasks, but the main pricing page does not list the rates. Assume a mid-tier AI step now uses 3 tasks (our assumption, not Zapier's figure). Those 300 runs become 900 tasks, and the shop's monthly total goes from 1,200 to 1,800. On a 2,000-task tier that still fits. At 4 tasks per AI step, the shop reaches 2,100 and spills into pay-per-task billing, which Zapier charges at a higher rate than plan tasks. Owners whose Zaps only move data and use Filter, Formatter, Paths, Tables or Forms can ignore this, because Zapier says those steps use no tasks. Owners with AI by Zapier, Code by Zapier or MCP steps should check before their next bill.
- What to do
- Ask your vendor
Before your next billing date, list every Zap with an AI, Code or MCP step, open Zapier's task usage rates page or ask Zapier support how many tasks each step now uses, and confirm your tier still covers the month.

Questions owners ask
- Do Filter, Formatter and Paths steps use tasks?
No. Zapier's pricing FAQ says Tables, Forms, Filter, Formatter, Paths, Delay, Looping, Sub-Zap, Digest, Zapier Manager and Storage steps do not count as tasks.
- What happens when I hit my task limit?
Zapier emails you near and at the limit. With pay-per-task billing on, Zaps keep running at a higher per-task rate up to a maximum; with it off, Zaps pause until the next usage period.
- Do failed actions use tasks?
No. Zapier says an action that does not complete successfully does not count against your task limit, and checking for new data (polling) never uses tasks.
Three to five of these, every weekday morning.
