Zapier moves AI steps and code to task-based billing; Professional from $19.99/mo
If your Zaps use AI or Code steps, each run may now use more tasks, and a busy month can tip into Zapier's higher pay-per-task rate.
- What happened
Zapier's pricing page, updated Oct. 27, 2026, says AI steps, code and its SDK now follow the same task-based pricing as Zap workflows and draw from one shared task pool, with the tasks per action varying by AI model tier, code runtime and connector type. Paid plans start at $19.99 a month for Professional and $69 a month for Team (25 users), and accounts that hit their task limit are switched to pay-per-task billing at a higher per-task rate unless they turn it off.
- What it means for a 10-to-50-person business
If your Zaps only move data between apps, little should change. Zapier says simple automations stay simple to price. If you use AI by Zapier steps, Code by Zapier or Zapier Agents, each of those steps can now use more than one task, depending on the AI model and how long the code runs. Take a 15-person plumbing shop on Professional at the 2,000-task tier. It runs a lead Zap 400 times a month: a web form comes in, an AI step summarises the job, the Zap creates the customer in the field-service app, then texts the dispatcher. The trigger is free, so that is 3 actions per run, or 1,200 tasks a month today. Now assume the AI step costs 3 tasks under the new rates. The same Zap uses 2,000 tasks, right at the cap, and a busy month tips into pay-per-task billing. The page text we reviewed does not list the per-model rates, so check Zapier's linked rate table. Filter, Formatter, Paths, Tables and Forms still use no tasks, which makes them the cheap place to put logic.
- What to do
- Ask your vendor
Before your next billing period, open your Zapier usage page and list every Zap with an AI or Code step, then check the new task usage rates or ask Zapier support how many tasks each step will now use.
- What it costs
What it costs - Audit of Zaps with AI or Code steps, assume 10 Zaps
- 1 hr (≈ $50 at $50/hr)
- Move AI steps to a lower model tier or shift logic into Formatter/Paths
- 2 hrs (≈ $100 at $50/hr)
- Next task tier up
- price not stated in source text; check the tier slider at zapier.com/pricing
- Annual billing instead of monthly
- 33% off, per Zapier
- Doing nothing
- $0 if you have no AI or Code steps; otherwise overage at a higher per-task rate, or Zaps pause at the cap

Questions owners ask
- Do triggers or polling use tasks?
No. Zapier says checking for new data and the trigger itself do not count. Only successful actions use tasks.
- What happens when I hit my task limit?
Zapier switches you to pay-per-task billing at a higher per-task rate unless you turn that off. If it is off, your Zaps pause until the next usage period.
- Which steps use no tasks?
Per Zapier: Tables, Forms, Filter, Formatter, Paths, Delay, Looping, Sub-Zap, Digest, Zapier Manager and Storage.
Three to five of these, every weekday morning.
